
Amos Chiya (Singapore)
Recognized for his remarkable versatility in opera, ballet, and symphonic conducting, the fast-rising young Singaporean conductor Chiya Amos is currently Regular Guest Conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre North Ossetia-Alania since 2018.
Through his mentor Riccardo Muti and following the grand lineage and tradition of Arturo Toscanini, Chiya focuses on the Italian operatic repertoire, particularly the operas of Verdi and Mozart, and his diverse repertoire encompasses more than forty operas and ballet. He has collaborated with opera houses and ballet companies throughout Russia, such as the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, RNO-Alania Opera and Ballet Theatre, St. Petersburg Ballet (Alexandrinsky Theatre), St. Petersburg Music Hall, Buryat Opera and Ballet Theatre, as well as opera and ballet companies around the world, including the Malmo Opera, Tokyo Opera Nomori, Shanghai Opera House, and others.
Chiya also holds the distinction of being the first Singaporean to conduct in several major cities in Russia, and has conducted some of Russia’s prominent orchestras, including the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Capella Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and others. In the recent seasons he has also worked with the North Ossetia-Alania Symphony Orchestra, KLASSIKA Orchestra, Togliatti Symphony Orchestra, Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra, Tomsk Symphony Orchestra, Kostroma Symphony Orchestra, Karaganda Symphony Orchestra, Baltic Sea Philharmonic, Manila Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble of the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, and the Tokyo-Harusai Orchestra. Chiya was also a guest conductor at several music festivals, including the Spring Festival in Tokyo, International Musical Olympus Festival, Estivals de Musique en Medoc, and the Singapore International Festival of Music, and was the first foreign conductor to open the 80th anniversary of the Lkhasaran Linkhovoin Opera Festival in Russia.
Chiya is the First Prize winner at the the 2nd St. Petersburg Open International Conducting Competition and a prize winner at the 5th Ilya Musin International Competition for Young Conductors. He was personally selected by Riccardo Muti to work with him on the operas of Verdi at the Spring Festival in Tokyo from 2019-2021, where he conducted Verdi’s Rigoletto and Macbeth. He has also worked closely as an assistant conductor to Yan Pascal Tortelier and both the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic in 2016/2017, and was assistant conductor of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre in 2020.
Chiya studied operatic, symphonic, and choral conducting at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Leonid Korchmar, as well as operatic conducting and vocal coaching at the Italian Opera Academy in Tokyo with Riccardo Muti. In addition to his conducting work, Chiya is the founder and artistic director of SENTIRE, helping the hearing and visually impaired in access, appreciate, and enjoy the performing arts, and was named Representative-designate for Music and Culture of the International Council of Environmental Law in 2021.
