Canadian Korean cellist Soo Bae, was recently praised by The New Yorker as “superb” and by The Strad, for being “rich and romantic with crisp incisive technique” She has performed across the world from HongKong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Spain, Austria, Germany, Italy, South America, Canada and the US, including a sold-out debut recital at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C , Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, Oriental Arts Center in Shanghai and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in Japan. In addition, she was featured soloist for the closing ceremony of the Pablo Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, where she performed on Casals’ own instrument.

​As a concert soloist, she was recently honored as the musician of the month in Musical America Magazine. Ms. Bae is also a winner of the 2005 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. In 2006, the Canada Council of the Arts awarded her First Prize in its Instrument Bank Competition, resulting in a three-year loan of the ca. 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello. Earlier that same year, she became the first Canadian ever to win a prize at the Adam International Cello Festival & Competition in New Zealand. In 2009, she was awarded the McGraw-Hills Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach from the Juilliard School.

Recent concerto engagement highlights includes soloist with the University of Chicago Symphony, Sinfonia Toronto, Orchestra London, Tacoma Symphony, Minnesota Sinfonia, New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Scottsdale Symphony, Ohio Valley Symphony, National Arts Center Orchestra, Oakville Symphony, Kingston Symphony, Korean Canadian Symphony and, Christchurch Symphony in New Zealand, and the Asian Youth Orchestra among others.

Network Television and Radio appearances highlights include WXQR- FM, CTV Canada, CBC Radio Canada, RTHK Radio Hong Kong, WSKG Binghamton public radio, KSUH radio, Hankook, CGNTV- USA

An avid chamber musician, Ms. Bae has collaborated with celebrated artists such Richard Goode, Charles Neidich, Lynn Harrell, Gilbert Kalish, Joel Smirnoff, Mitsuki Uchida, members from the Guarneri and Juilliard quartets among others. She has also toured with “Musicians from Marlboro” appearing in numerous chamber music festivals including Marlboro, Yellow Barn, Amelia Island Music Festival, Sarasota, Orford, and Verbier.

As a dedicated champion of new music, Ms. Bae has premiered and commissioned numerous works written especially for her by composers such Huang Ruo, David Ludwig, Zou Tien

and  Shinuh Lee

Thriving on innovative collaborations, Ms. Bae has also performed and recorded with violinist/composer Mark O’Connor, jazz clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera and has a guitar/voice and cello duo called ‘Walk 132’ formed with her husband, Dr. Jason Suh MD. In the orchestral circuit, Ms. Bae has enjoyed subbing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and has served as the principal cellist of the Curtis Orchestra, Juilliard Symphony Orchestra, New York String Seminar Orchestra, Haddonfield Symphony and most recently as the guest principal cellist to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota.

Ms. Bae released an album for the Naxos label featuring all solo works for the cello, including the twelve solo caprices by Alfredo Piatti (of which these works often stand in parallel to Paganini’s 24 Caprices for violin) was reviewed and praised for the ‘staggering display of technical brilliance and outstanding range of expression, having the ability to transform these works, often thought of as nothing more than etudes, into fulfilling musical jewels’. Her recent album for the CAG label includes the complete Brahms Trios with Elizabeth Larson, violin and Mia Chung, piano which will be released early 2016.

Intensely involved in teaching, Soo Bae has given master classes around the globe and has been invited to judge for various competitions including the recent Juilliard Concerto Competition, Canada Council Instrument Bank competition in Toronto, preliminary round Juror for the Concert Artist Guild International Competition, the New York String Orchestra in Carnegie Hall among many others.  Ms. Bae is the director and founder of Angelos Mission Ensemble Chamber Music Program in New Jersey which is dedicated to training and empowering young musicians to serve and love the community through music. She also teaches at the Curtis Summerfest in Philadelphia as a faculty to Young Artist Summer Program and Chamber Music and Orchestra for Adults Program and has participated as part of ‘Curtis on tour’.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Soo Bae began her cello studies at the age of six and moved to Toronto two years later, where she enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She received her Bachelor of Music from The Curtis Institute of Music under Orlando Cole and Master of Music Degree and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School as a full scholarship student where she served as assistant faculty under Joel Krosnick for 4 years. She has also studied with Harvey Shapiro, Tim Eddy,

David Soyer and Peter Wiley.

Ms. Bae uses The Ivashkin Joseph Guarneri filius Andreae of Cremona cello dated 1710 on a loan from a generous private donor and resides in New Jersey with her husband and
